Narrative Mini-Lesson:

  • (4-5 min.) Modeling: Talk Aloud as you make list of places, jotting possible stories to side in brackets.
  • Ask students to make a list in their notebooks like yours. Teacher adds to list/extends as students brainstorm.
  • Students share ideas in small groups. Encourage students to steal any good ideas that hear that remind them of their own stories. Model “stealing ideas” by adding to teacher list when you hear something.
  1. Select one place and sketch
  • MODEL: Choose a place from list and sketch in notebook, drawing all the details you remember. Tell students that drawing has a way of pulling out details for writers. Think aloud as you sketch.
  • Students do the same and share in groups when they finish.
  1. Read Kittle’s model place narrative.
  • Annotate narrative as you read aloud, noting how she starts, the separate stories she tells.
  • Ask students what THEME they think she’s trying to convey. Highlight the part of her narrative that shares the theme.
  • Create anchor chart to note what moves she’s making as a writer: show not tell, zooming in on precise moments, dialogue, theme (So What?)

  • Students need to come to class having selected one place for their narrative.
